As of 00:42 GMT July 23 there was 88,159 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 1,242 , or 1.43 per cent, on the day prior. Of this 359, or 0.41 per cent, are serious or critical. A total 2,346** people were discharged or marked as recovered.
Indonesia yesterday set a new high for daily increase in coronavirus-related deaths with 139 to take total fatalities there to 4,459, while 1,882 new cases and 1,789 recoveries saw the caseload ease to 37,037.
The Philippines yesterday reported six deaths to see total fatalities there edge up to 1,843, while 1,594 new cases saw active infections jump to 46,803, of which 351 are regarded as serious or critical. Following treatment 342 people were declared as recovered.
There were no other COVID-19 deaths recorded throughout Asean yesterday.
Active cases in Singapore rose yesterday, jumping to 3,922** on the back of 310 new infections and 211** discharges, while 16 new cases detected in Malaysia and four recoveries saw active infections there jump to 142, five of who remains in a serious or critical condition.
Vietnam yesterday recorded seven new infections to see the caseload there jump to 43, while six new cases in Thailand pushed the number of active cases to 98. Two new cases in Myanmar saw the caseload there edge up to 57.
There were no reports of changes in Brunei, Cambodia, or Lao PDR during the period.
Since the first Asean case of COVID-19 was identified in Thailand on January 12 there has been 225,964 confirmed cases recorded in Asean member countries with 131,286 people, or about 58.10 per cent of all Asean infections, having been treated and discharged.
In the past 24-hours the number of COVID-19 ‘survivors’ throughout Asean increased 1.82 per cent DoD, while deaths increased 2.27 per cent.
There has been 6,519 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Asean member countries, representing a case mortality rate (CMR) based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead) of 4.73 per cent. Based on the total number of Asean infections the regional CMR is 2.88 per cent.
As of today, July 23, some 39.01 per cent of all confirmed COVID-19 infections throughout Asean remain active.
**On May 28, 2020 the Singapore government announced that it was adopting a “time-based discharge criteria” under which SARS-CoV-2 positive patients will be discharged 21-days after the onset of symptoms, without the need for them to pass two negative tests 24-hours apart, as had been the case in the past.
Discharged patients will be required to self isolate for another seven days prior to commencing work, but no additional tests were announced as going to be performed on them prior to their return to employment. The active case numbers for Singapore past May 29 should be regarded as a guide only.Â
Global COVID-19 cases up to July 23
In the 24-hours to 00:42 GMT July 23 the number of new COVID-19 cases globally reportedly increased by 1.85 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 15,364,095*, an increase of 278,877* people; a new high for the number of new infections in a 24-hour period.
The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours increased by 1.14 per cent DoD to 629,296*, an increase of 7,115*.
According to the Worldometers tally, China yesterday reported 14 new cases, however, these had been filed after the close-off for July 21 and represent that day’s figures.
In late filings after the close for July 22 China added 22 new case to see 240 active infections, with 78,855 reported recoveries and 4,634 deaths. There has been 83,729 COVID-19 cases recorded in China.
Brazil again remained at the top of the global COVID-19 table yesterday with 1,293 deaths pushing total fatalities there to 82,890, while 65,339 new infections, the second most globally during the period, saw the caseload sit at some 616,843.
There has been 2,231,871 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil, with 1,532,138 people having reportedly recovered.
The USA yesterday recorded the second most number of COVID-19 deaths globally with 1,211, pushing total fatalities there to 146,140, while 71,476 new cases, the most globally during the period, saw the caseload sit at some 2,011,613.
There has been 4,100,045 COVID-19 cases in America with some 1,942,292 reported recoveries.
India yesterday recorded the third most number of deaths globally with 1,120 to take total deaths there to 29,890, while 45,599 new cases saw the caseload jump to 425,528. There has been 1,239,684 confirmed COVID-19 cases in India with 784,266 reported recoveries.
The next most number of infections recorded in the previous 24-hours were in South Africa, Colombia, Mexico, Russia, Argentina, and Peru, who reported between 4,463 and 13,150 new cases each.
Meanwhile, the number of people treated and discharged globally yesterday rose by 239,385*, or 2.63 per cent, over the day prior to 9,343,500.
At the current rate there will be/ have been some 18.1 million SARS-CoV-2 infections by July 31, with some 696,000 deaths.
In the past seven days COVID-19 related illnesses have been blamed for the deaths of 37,946 people.

As of 00:42 GMT July 23 there was 5,391,299 active cases of COVID-19 globally, an increase of 29,368 or 0.55 per cent on the day prior, of which some 1.23 per cent, or 66,174 people, are classified as in a serious or critical condition.
Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current CMR is 6.31 per cent. On March 15 the CMR for completed cases was 8.0 per cent. As a percentage of total infections the CMR today is 4.10 per cent.
As of July 23, some 35.09 per cent of all diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infections remain active, while 60.81 per cent of all diagnosed cases have recovered.
