Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MEYS) has released a list of schools that will lead the country’s education system reopening, expected to occur some time next month. Schools in Cambodia have been closed since March 16 as part of the country’s successful attempt to prevent community transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Those included in the first of a three phase planned opening unsurprisingly include 20 of the most expensive private institutions in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Battambang.

Those selected are required to demonstrate high levels of preparedness for opening in accordance with Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. These include regular personal temperature checks, regular hand washing, social distancing, and face mask use. Classes must not exceed 15 pupils.

Institutions are expected to implement education in a ‘new normal’ manner, with some classes held online and some others now voluntary and requiring parental consent.

In addition to signing a contract for the implementation of the educational health safety measures with the ministry, educational institutions will be required to establish a group responsible for health and safety, which will carry out regular inspections to ensure compliance. Those that fail to comply with the new requirements face being shut down, according to the education ministry.

Other requirements include schools conducting health screening and COVID-19 testing for educators and students, with some schools already rushing to rewrite employment contracts for teachers, requiring them to meet the costs of an unlimited number of COVID-19 tests.

In Phase II schools with moderate-safety standards will be allowed to reopen, perhaps as early as a month after the first 20, with Phase III seeing schools with minimum-safety standards allowed to reopen, perhaps in October.
