The British Embassy in Yangon and UK Department for International Trade (DIT), in partnership with the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), organised a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) conference at the Sule Shangri-La last week. The focus is to identify and close the growing mismatch between graduate skills and market needs in the country.

A return to rice supremacy
State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has urged farmers and stakeholders in the rice industry to learn and practice new agricultural methods in order to bring the past glory of rice production back to the country.
“We have prospects for regaining our past status as the top rice export country,” said the State Counsellor, calling the country “the world’s rice basket”.

About 200 people marched in Myanmar’s biggest city on Monday to protest government plans to amend a law governing public demonstrations to make it easier to charge participants with crimes and increase penalties for violations.

Myanmar has pulled back security personnel and weapons from near a no-man’s land along Bangladesh’s southeastern frontier, as border-guard officials from both countries met Friday after Dhaka complained about a troop build-up by Naypyidaw, RFA reported.
