Bomb hoax: fear and panic engulf Lion Air Flight JT687 (video)

Fear and panic engulfed the cabin of Lion Air Flight JT687 from the Indonesian island of Borneo to Jakarta on Monday night, May 28, resulting in a spontaneous evacuation of passengers after a man was overheard telling a flight attendant that there was a bomb on the plane.

In the shaky video above passengers of Flight JT687 can be seen standing on the wing of the Boeing 737, with some leaping 12.5 metres (about 41ft) to the ground. Others, perhaps knowledgeable that they were standing on more than 3,000 litres (about 792 gallons) of highly flammable Jet Fuel can be seen sliding down the engine nacelle.

According to local authorities eleven people were injured, the majority with broken bones and head wounds, after a 26-year-old man identified as a student of Universitas Tanjung Pura (UTP) was overheard telling a flight attendant while boarding that there was a bomb on Flight JT687.

Police spokesman Nanang Purnomo told local media that fear and panic then engulfed the cabin of the aircraft as people attempted to flee fearing their life was in danger.

Scheduled to depart from Supadio International Airport at 6.50pm local time with 189 passengers, Flight JT687 was delayed by almost three hours while West Kalimantan Police searched the plane, arriving in Jakarta at 11.10pm Monday night.

This is the ninth bomb hoax Lion Air has had to deal with this year, the last on May 27 resulted in a two-hour delay to a Jakarta-Kuala Lumpur flight.

Mr Sagiri (also reported as Frantinus Nagiri) and the passenger who opened the emergency exit door were detained by police and are expected to face criminal charges.

Under Article 437 (2) of Law No. 1, 2009 on Aviation anybody providing false information endangering aviation safety resulting in an accident or loss of assets faces up to eight years in jail.

Last April a County Court judge in the Australian state of Victoria criticised police for keeping passengers locked onboard a Malaysia Airlines flight bound from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for 90 minutes after a man made a bomb hoax shortly after take off.
