As of 00:59 GMT May 1 there was 31,731 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 886 or 2.87 per cent, on the day prior. Of this 165, or 0.52 per cent, are classified as serious or critical. An additional 308 people were discharged and sent home after successful treatment.
The Philippines yesterday recorded the most number of deaths in a 24-hour period in the region with 10 fatalities there pushing COVID-19 deaths to 568. Active cases rose to 6,877 with the addition of 276 new infections, with 31 patients classified as serious or critical. Following successful treatment and negative tests 20 people were sent home.
In Indonesia eight people succumbed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus yesterday to bring fatalities there to 792, while 347 new cases saw active infections increase to 7,804. Following treatment 131 people were discharged.
Malaysia yesterday recorded two deaths to bring total fatalities there to 102, while 84 discharges offset 57 fresh cases to see the active caseload fall to 1,729, with 40 patients classified as serious or critical.
Singapore yesterday recorded its 15th death after one person succumbed to COVID-19, while 528 new cases saw active infections climb to 14,910, of which 22 are regarded as serious or critical. Following treatment 56 people went home.
Thailand was the only other Asean member state yesterday to report fresh infections, with seven new cases being detected. The active caseload fell to 216 on the back of 19 people being discharged, while 61 people remain classified as serious or critical.
In Lao PDR the active COVID-19 caseload fell to 11 after one person was discharged, while the situation remain unchanged in Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
Since the first Asean case was identified in Thailand on January 12 there has been 44,430 confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in Asean member countries with 11,161 people, or about 25.12 per cent of all infections, having been treated and discharged.
In the past 24-hours the number of COVID-19 ‘survivors’ throughout Asean increased 2.84 per cent, while deaths increased 1.38 per cent.
There has been 1,538 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Asean member countries, representing a case mortality rate (CMR) based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead) of 12.11 per cent. Based on the total number of infections the CMR is 3.46 per cent.
As of today, May 1, some 71.42 per cent of all confirmed COVID-19 infections in Asean remain active.
Global COVID-19 cases up to May 1
In the 24-hours to 00:01 GMT May 1, the number of new COVID-19 cases globally rose 2.67 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 3,304,216 an increase of 86,033.
The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours increased by 2.54 per cent DoD to 233,830, an increase of 5,801, the majority, 2,201, in the USA.
China reported four new infections bringing the official case count there to 82,862, with 619 current active cases and 77,610 recovered patients. There has been 4,633 deaths from SARS-CoV-2 in China.
In comparison the USA yesterday reported 30,825 new infections to bring the active caseload there to 878,839, with 152,324 recovered patients. There has been 1,095,019 SARS-CoV-2 infections recorded in the USA.
Meanwhile, the number of people treated and discharged globally rose by 39,067, or 3.91 per cent, over the day prior to 1,039,168.
At the current rate there will be/ have been more than 4.9 million SARS-CoV-2 infections by the middle of May, with some 340,000 deaths.

As of 00:59 GMT May 1 there was 2,032,708 active cases of COVID-19 globally, and increase of 2.10 per cent on the day prior, of which some 2.51 per cent, or 50,944 people, classified as in serious or critical condition.
Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current CMR is 18.38 per cent. On March 15 the CMR was eight per cent. As a percentage of total infections the CMR today is 7.08 per cent.
As of May 1, 61.49 per cent of all diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infections remain active, while 31.43 per cent of all diagnosed cases have recovered.
