As of 01:40 GMT March 18 there was 1,573 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 248 on the day prior.

The most number of active cases remain in Malaysia where 107 new cases yesterday saw the number of people with active COVID-19 infections rise to 622, with 10 people reported to be in a serious or critical condition. Two people reportedly died from COVID-19 in Malaysia yesterday.

Forty-five new cases in the Philippines yesterday saw the number of active cases there rise to 170, with 38 fresh cases in Indonesia yesterday pushing its COVID-19 active case load to 156. Indonesia also reported two deaths from COVID-19 yesterday bringing the number of deaths there to seven, second only to the Philippines with 12 deaths.

In Thailand 30 new cases saw the number of active COVID-19 cases there hit 135, one of which is considered serious or critical, while Singapore saw it’s COVID-19 case load hit 152, with the addition of 23 new cases. Fourteen people in Singapore are listed as serious or critical.

In Cambodia 21 fresh cases yesterday saw the number of COVID-19 infections there almost triple to 32, while five new cases in Vietnam and two in Brunei saw the number of confirmed cases there rise to 50 and two respectively.

Laos PDR and Myanmar are yet to report a single COVID-19 case.

There has now been 1,630 confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in Asean member countries, with 235 people having been treated and discharged.

Twenty-two people have died from COVID-19 in Asean member countries.

Global COVID-19 cases up to March 18

As of 01:40 GMT March 18 the number of new cases of COVID-19 globally rose 8.70 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 198,349, an increase of 15,875.

This is the largest single day increase in new cases since the Chinese city of Wuhan was locked down on Jan 23.

The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours jumped 11.42 per cent DoD to 7,980, an increase of 818, the majority (345) in Italy. China reported 11 deaths during the period.

Meanwhile the number of people treated and discharged globally rose by 2,882, or 3.64 per cent over the day prior to 82,763.

As of 01:40 GMT March 18 there was 107,606 active cases of COVID-19 globally, of which some six per cent or 6,416 cases were classified as serious or critical.

Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current case mortality rate is nine per cent.

At the current rate there will be/ have been more than 630,000 cases by the end of March, and more than 36,000 deaths.
