COVID-19 in Asean: update for June 1 -- Asean cases top 90,000; 45,000 active

As of 00:28 GMT June 1 there was 45,481 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 695, or 1.55 per cent, on the day prior. Of this 94, or 0.21 per cent, are classified as serious or critical. An additional 1,399** people were declared as having recovered.

Indonesia yesterday continued to recorded the most number of deaths throughout the region with 40 fatalities taking the number of deaths there to 1,613, while 700 new infections pushed the active caseload to 17,552. Following treatment 293 people were discharged.

In the Philippines seven fatalities yesterday pushed COVID-19 deaths there to 957, while 862 fresh infections saw the active caseload jump to 13,220, of which 73 are considered serious or critical. Following treatment 101 people went home.

There were no other COVID-19 related deaths recorded in any other Asean member country during the period.

In Singapore yesterday the number of active cases** fell for the 17th consecutive day on the back of 518 new infections and 972 discharges to 13,162, of which eight are regarded as serious or critical.

Meanwhile, the combination of 57 fresh cases and 23 discharges yesterday saw the active caseload in Malaysia bumped up to 1,351, of which nine are said to be serious or critical.

In Thailand yesterday four new cases and two recoveries saw active cases edge up to 61, one of whom is said to be in a serious or critical condition.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Myanmar yesterday dropped to 80 on the back of eight discharges, while there was no reported changes in Brunei, Cambodia, Lao PDR, or Vietnam.

Since the first Asean case of COVID-19 was identified in Thailand on January 12 there has been 91,180 confirmed cases recorded in Asean member countries with 42,926 people, or about 47.08 per cent, of all infections having been treated and discharged.

In the past 24-hours the number of COVID-19 ‘survivors’ throughout Asean increased 3.37 per cent DoD, while deaths increased 2.29 per cent.

There has been 2,773 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Asean member countries, representing a case mortality rate (CMR) based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead) of 6.07 per cent. Based on the total number of infections the CMR is 3.04 per cent.

As of today, June 1, some 49.88 per cent of all confirmed COVID-19 infections throughout Asean remain active.

**On May 28 the Singapore government announced that it was adopting a “time-based discharge criteria” under which SARS-CoV-2 positive patients would be discharged 21-days after the onset of symptoms, without the need for them to pass two negative tests 24-hours apart as had been the case in the past.
Discharged patients will be required to self isolate for another seven days prior to commencing work, but no additional tests were announced as going to be performed on them prior to their return to employment. The active case numbers for Singapore past May 29 should be regarded as a guide only.

Global COVID-19 cases up to June 1

In the 24-hours to 00:01 GMT June 1, the number of new COVID-19 cases globally rose 1.77 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 6,259,248, an increase of 108,766.

The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours increased by 0.86 per cent DoD to 373,697, an increase of 3,191 with the majority in the USA.

China yesterday reported two new infections and two recoveries to see the active number of cases there remain at 63. There has been 83,001 SARS-CoV-2 infections in China with 78,304 people having recovered and 4,634 official deaths.

The USA yesterday reported 20,350* new infections, 6,308 recoveries, and 638* deaths to push total fatalities to 106,195 and active cases to 1,189,429. More than 17,000 people in the US are rated as serious or critical.

There has been 1,837,170 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections recorded in the USA with only 29.47 per cent of all diagnosed US cases being discharged.

Rapidly climbing the global COVID-19 infection and death ladder, Brazil yesterday reported 16,409* new cases and 480* deaths to see active cases swell to 278,980, of which 8,318 people are said to be serious or critical.

Meanwhile, the number of people treated and discharged globally yesterday rose by 51,126, or 1.87 per cent, over the day prior to 2,785,674.

At the current rate there will be/ have been more than 8.1 million SARS-CoV-2 infections by the middle of June, with some 420,000 deaths.

In the past seven days COVID-19 related illnesses have been blamed for the deaths of 27,263 people.

As of 00:28 GMT June 1 there was 3,099,877 active cases of COVID-19 globally, an increase of 1.77 per cent on the day prior, of which some 1.73 per cent, or 53,409 people, are classified as in a serious or critical condition.

Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current CMR is 11.83 per cent. On March 15 the CMR for completed cases was 8.0 per cent. As a percentage of total infections the CMR today is 5.97 per cent.

As of June 1, some 49.52 per cent of all diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infections remain active, while 44.46 per cent of all diagnosed cases have recovered.
