COVID-19 in Asean: update for April 2 -- America leads the world in daily deaths: 1,049

As of 01:40 GMT April 2 there was 8,148 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 376, or 4.84 per cent, on the day prior.

Indonesia recorded 21 deaths and 149 new cases yesterday, bringing the total number of deaths there to 157 and active cases to 1,417

Eight deaths and 227 new cases in the Philippines yesterday saw COVID-19 fatalities there rise to 96 and active cases to 2,165, one of whom is classified as serious or critical.

In Malaysia yesterday 142 new cases and two deaths brought the number of active cases there to 2,218, 102 of who are classified as serious or critical, and deaths to 45.

Thailand recorded two COVID-19 deaths and 120 new cases over the past 24-hours to see the tally there rise to 12 deaths and 1,254 active cases, 23 of which are classified as serious or critical.

In Singapore yesterday 74 new cases saw the number of active COVID-19 infections there rise to 752, of which 24 are regarded as serious or critical.

In Vietnam six fresh infections saw the active caseload there rise to 155, of which three are classified as serious or critical, while two new infections in Brunei saw the number of active COVID-19 cases there tally 78, three of who are classified as serious or critical.

One new COVID-19 case in Myanmar brought the number of active cases there to 15, while one fresh case in Laos PDR saw its caseload increase to 10. Cambodia reported no new infections in the 24-hour period.

Since the first Asean case was identified in Thailand on January 12 there has been 10,151 confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in Asean member countries with 1,688 people, or about 16.62 per cent of all infections, having been treated and discharged.

There has been 315 COVID-19 deaths in Asean member countries representing a case mortality rate based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead) of 15.72 per cent. As of today, April 2, 80.27 per cent of all confirmed COVID-19 infections remain active.

Global COVID-19 cases up to April 2

In the 24-hours to 01:40 GMT April 2 the number of new cases of COVID-19 globally rose 9.00 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 935,581, an increase of 77,220.

The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours rose 11.61 per cent DoD to 47,221, an increase of 4,912, the majority (1,041) in the USA. China reported 36 new infections and seven deaths during the period. Officially, there has been 3,312 deaths in China and 81,554 cases of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the number of people treated and discharged globally rose by 17,119, or 9.66 per cent over the day prior to 194,260.

At the current rate there will be/ have been more than 2.4 million infections and 158,000 deaths by Easter Sunday, April 12.

As of 01:40 GMT April 2 there was 694,100 active cases of COVID-19 globally, of which some five per cent, or 35,478 cases are classified as serious or critical.

Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current case mortality rate (CMR) is 20 per cent. On March 15 the CMR was eight per cent.
