As of 01:40 GMT March 20 there was 1,921 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 282 on the day prior.

The most number of active cases remain in Malaysia where 110 new cases yesterday saw the number of people with active COVID-19 infections rise to 823, with 15 people reported to be in a serious or critical condition.

In Indonesia 81 new cases saw active COVID-19 cases jump to 268, with six deaths pushing the number of fatalities there to 25, the most of any Asean member country.

In Thailand 60 new cases saw the number of active COVID-19 cases there hit 229, one of which is considered serious or critical, while 32 fresh cases in Singapore saw the total there rise to 221, 14 of who are considered serious.

In the Philippines yesterday 15 new cases saw the number of active COVID-19 infections there rise to 192, one of which is regarded as serious or critical.

Ten new COVID-19 cases in Cambodia saw its number of active cases rise to 46,  while nine new cases in Vietnam saw the total number of active cases there reach 69.

Brunei saw its COVID-19 case load hit 73, with the addition of five new case, while Laos PDR and Myanmar continue to report not a single COVID-19 case.

There has now been 2,247 confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in Asean member countries, with 281 people, or about 12.5 per cent of all  infections, having been treated and discharged.

Forty-five people have died from COVID-19 in Asean member countries, representing a case mortality rate based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead) of 16 per cent.

In the 24-hours to 01:40 GMT March 20 the number of new cases of COVID-19 globally rose 12.23 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 245,578, an increase of 26,756.

This is the largest single day increase in new cases since the COVID-19 outbreak began.

The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours jumped 12.26 per cent DoD to 10,048, an increase of 1,097, the majority (427) in Italy. China reported eight deaths during the period, and 43 new cases. This is the first occasion that more than 1,000 deaths have  been recorded in a 24 hour period

Meanwhile the number of people treated and discharged globally rose by 3,642, or 4.30 per cent over the day prior to 88,437.

As of 01:40 GMT March 20 there was 147.093 active cases of COVID-19 globally, of which some five per cent or 7,378 cases were classified as serious or critical.

Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current case mortality rate is 10 per cent.

At the current rate there will be/ have been almost one million cases of COVD-19 by the end of March, and more than 40,000 deaths.
