It was all smiles late last week at Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS) when it finally received its Guinness World Record certificate for the Largest Practical Business Seminar held last August.

As reported exclusively by AEC News Today on October 20 (See: Cambodia Snatches World Record From Indonesia), the tiny Southeast Asian kingdom won the award when 2,304 Cambodians aged between 15 and 29 took part in a seminar aimed at promoting entrepreneurship among Cambodia youth.

Supported by the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MLVT), the Japan Social Safety Net Fund (JSSNF), and private sector partnerships under the GoBusiness17 campaign, the Largest Practical Business Seminar heard from some of Cambodia’s most successful entrepreneurs. Attendees were informed of the support and resources available to those wishing to strike out on their own, before breaking into smaller groups for workshop sessions.

Tauch Chhoeun, the MoEYSs director general of youth, presided over the Guinness World Record acceptance ceremony on behalf of MoEYS Minister Hang Chuon Naron, and said “setting the world record is a pride and honour for the young Cambodians who engaged in the training. Their active participation demonstrates young Cambodians’ interest in entrepreneurship. We should all be proud.

“This sort of seminar can help motivate young people to use their potential to start their own business, or get ready for the job market. Entrepreneurs are very important. Local and foreign entrepreneurs are generating jobs for Khmer people and helping grow our economy”, he added.

Mr Tauch said that due to the success of the seminar a similar event will be held in Siem Reap Province in December, with some 1,000 people expected to attend, while the ILO is helping the ministry to include entrepreneurial education into the Cambodia education curriculum.

Additionally, the ministry will be introducing its Community-based Enterprise Development (C-BED) programme across the country, a low cost, peer-to-peer, activities-based, highly scalable approach to business skills training and youth development.

The aim, Mr Tauch said, is to reach, connect and encourage young Cambodians no matter where they are or their situation and boost the opportunity for their professional development and understanding of entrepreneurship.

In addition to this latest world record, Cambodia holds:

  • The world record for the largest religious structure ever built, Angkor Wat,
  • The world record as the home to the Laziest freshwater turtle – the giant soft-shelled turtle (Pelochelys cantorii)
  • The world record for the most state roles held by a modern royal: set in 1993 by King Norodom Sihanouk
  • The world record for the Largest sticky rice cake (num ansorm): weighing a whopping 4,040kg (8,906lb 10 oz) set on April 13, 2015 in Siem Reap to celebrate the 2015 Cambodian New Year
  • The world record for the the largest Madison dance: set on April 15, 2015 by the Union Of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) in Siem Reap, to celebrate the 2015 Cambodia New Year
