COVID-19 in Asean: update for May 2 -- cases continue to fall in Thailand

As of 00:52 GMT May 2 there was 33,222 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 1,491, or 4.70 per cent, on the day prior. Of this 163, or 0.49 per cent, are classified as serious or critical. An additional 212 people were discharged and sent home after successful treatment.

The Philippines yesterday recorded the most number of deaths in a 24-hour period in the region with 11 fatalities there pushing COVID-19 deaths to 579. Active cases rose to 7,109 with the addition of 284 new infections, with 31 patients classified as serious or critical. Following successful treatment and negative tests 41 people were sent home.

In Indonesia eight people succumbed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus yesterday to bring fatalities there to 800, while 433 new cases saw active infections increase to 8,160. Following treatment 69 people were discharged.

Malaysia yesterday recorded one death to bring total fatalities there to 103, while 69 fresh cases saw the active caseload increase to 1,758 of which 37 patients are classified as serious or critical. Yesterday 39 people went home in Malaysia after treatment.

Singapore active infections top 15,000

Singapore yesterday recorded its 16th death after one person succumbed to COVID-19, while 932 new cases saw active infections climb to 15,817, of which 23 are regarded as serious or critical. Following treatment 56 people went home.

In Thailand six fresh infections and 35 discharges saw the active caseload drop to 186, of which 61 remain classified as serious or critical, while one new case and three discharge in Myanmar saw active cases there drop to 114.

The situation remain unchanged in Brunei, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Vietnam.

Since the first Asean case was identified in Thailand on January 12 there has been 46,155 confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in Asean member countries with 11,373 people, or about 24.64 per cent of all infections, having been treated and discharged.

In the past 24-hours the number of COVID-19 ‘survivors’ throughout Asean increased 1.90 per cent, while deaths increased 1.37 per cent.

There has been 1,538 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Asean member countries, representing a case mortality rate (CMR) based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead) of 12.06 per cent. Based on the total number of infections the CMR is 3.38 per cent.

As of today, May 2, some 71.98 per cent of all confirmed COVID-19 infections in Asean remain active.

Global COVID-19 cases up to May 2

In the 24-hours to 00:01 GMT May 2, the number of new COVID-19 cases globally rose 2.86 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 3,398,473 an increase of 94,552.

The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours increased by 2.41 per cent DoD to 239,448, an increase of 5,624, the majority, 1,897, in the USA.

China reported 12 new infections bringing the official case count there to 82,874, with 599 current active cases and 77,642 recovered patients. There has been 4,633 deaths from SARS-CoV-2 in China.

In comparison the USA yesterday reported 36,007 new infections to bring the active caseload there to 903,714, with 161,563 recovered patients. There has been 1,131,030 SARS-CoV-2 infections recorded in the USA.

Meanwhile, the number of people treated and discharged globally rose by 41,988, or 4.04 per cent, over the day prior to 1,081,156.

At the current rate there will be/ have been more than five million SARS-CoV-2 infections by the middle of May, with some 480,000 deaths.

As of 00:52 GMT May 2 there was 2,079,552 active cases of COVID-19 globally, and increase of 2.30 per cent on the day prior, of which some 2.47 per cent, or 51,351 people, classified as in serious or critical condition.

Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current CMR is 18.14 per cent. On March 15 the CMR was eight per cent. As a percentage of total infections the CMR today is 7.05 per cent.

As of May 2, 61.19 per cent of all diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infections remain active, while 31.81 per cent of all diagnosed cases have recovered.
