Like many other Asean member states the Philippines is rapidly running out of electricity. Demand is expected to more than double to more than over 40,000 megawatts (MW) by 2040, propelled by a rapidly growing population and industrialisation.
Hoping to find a solution to the Philippines’ increasing energy needs will be top of he agenda when 180 of the world’s leading energy providers gather in Pasay City next week for The Future Energy Show Philippines 2019 (TFSEP2019).
Billed as the Philippines’ largest energy event, TFSEP2019 will take place between May 20 and 21 at the SMX Convention Center, with the Philippine Energy Plan (PEP) 2017 – 2040 the focus of discussions.
Now in its sixth year TFSEP2019 will bring together more than 8,000 stakeholders. Policymakers, regulators, local industry heavyweights, international energy experts, and world class technology and solution providers will discuss strategies, trends, and innovative solutions available to bolster the Philippines’ energy security.
Keynote speakers include Ivan Poerwowidjojo, business development manager at Tesla Singapore, Antonio Castellano, partner at McKinsey & Company, Dr Varun Sivaram, chief technology officer at ReNew Power Limited, India, and Sherwin Gatchalian, Senator & chairman of the Senate Committees on Energy and Economic Affairs.
180 speakers, 200 exhibitors
Some 180 speakers have been confirmed for the eight free TFSEP2019 conferences, while more than 200 exhibitors will be hoping to attract the eye of energy industry representatives with the latest in solar, storage, wind, smart energy, power generation, and electric vehicles.
According to the organisers some 80 per cent of exhibitors will come from the solar energy sector, in response to the unique opportunities and potential in this area. With hydro and geothermal facilities taking between three to five years to complete, many are excited about the potential for solar, which is easier to construct, scale and less obtrusive.
The PEP 2017 – 2040 blueprint was developed by the Department of Energy’s (DOE) and aims to secure the Philippines’ energy future.
The plan calls for renewable energy to increase to at least 20,000 megawatts MW, as well as for increased reserves of local oil, gas, and coal. Some 16,949 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy is on the horizon comprising: hydro 10,792 MW, solar, 4,081 MW, wind, 1,039 MW, geothermal, 684 MW, biomass, 326 MW, and ocean 26 MW.
Asean Power & Energy Summit
Organised in partnership with host utility company Manila Electric Railroad And Light Company (Meralco), TFSEP2019 will coincide with the first edition of the Asean Power & Energy Summit (APES), which will see 60 of Asia’s power and energy leaders come together.
APES will examine how the digital revolution is changing the way electricity is generated, transmitted, and distributed, in addition to how changing market and regulatory landscapes are shaping the future of power projects in the region.
Rolling blackouts in Luzon and Metro Manila recetly have only served to highlight the strain rapid economic growth is placing on the country’s energy sector.
By 2040 demand for electricity in the Philippines is expected to exceed 40,000 MW, more than double the country’s current total output of 19,536 MW.
