00:57 | Addressing a gathering of foreign diplomats and dignitaries yesterday, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said human rights protection is definitely on the national agenda, with the government committed to reducing human rights violations in the country.

General Chan-o-cha said that the government has continued to crackdown on violations by identifying sectors that require additional enforcement and opening channels for people to report suspicious activities to the authorities.

02:18 | The heads of foreign affairs of Thailand and the United Kingdom have met to confirm the commitment between the two countries on bilateral ties at all levels. The two officials also discussed cooperation in areas including aerospace, financial technology, science, and innovation, as well as regional, and international affairs.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson later met with Thailand Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha to discuss bilateral cooperation in boosting trade and investment opportunities between the two countries, and Thailand’s plans to be a gateway for the CMLV (Cambodia, Myanmar, Lao PDR, and Vietnam) cluster.

04:15 | The Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) is not concerned about the possible rejection of two draft election laws by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), but noted that it will not spend much time on both drafts in case they are eventually rejected.

Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Pravich Rattanapian insisted that the objections by election commission (EC) against both laws are all about obstacles to their work and possible contradictions to the intent of the constitution.

05:44 | The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) committee in charge of natural resources and the environment is preparing to seek approval for an amended wildlife protection bill that will carry harsher punishments for poaching in the Western Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary.

The amended law will likely increase the jail term for violators to between ten and 20 years. Additionally, the committee has insisted that new regulations must be adopted by related agencies to prevent influential figures from gaining access to protected forests for hunting.

07:41 | The Ministry of Labour (MoL) has urged employers to take migrant workers for a medical check-up at hospitals designated by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) before going to One Stop Service (OSS) Centers to bring their migrant workers into the labour system by March 31.

08:49 | The government has launched a new campaign to gain support for the Ladprao canal development project. The government has assigned the Public Relation Department (PRD) and the Royal Thai Army, radio, and television channels to be in charge of the campaign and to disseminate information to the public. Moreover, related district offices will hold special activities to gain more support from city residents for the project.

12:25 | Minister for Natural Resources and Environment, General Surasak Karnjanarat, has addressed a seminar aimed at developing an Eco-friendly mining industry. General Karnjanarat said that there is a need for a standard to govern mining activities to ensure that it does not impact the local community, environment, society, economy, and public health.

Meanwhile, the government has revised the Minerals Act to require the establishment of a natural mineral management committee to oversee government activities and to help balance between industrial advancement and environment conservation.

13:58 | The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) will host the ‘Thailand International Furniture Expo 2018’ between March 7 and 11 to provide  Thai entrepreneurs with the opportunity of expanding their market. According to FTI chairman, Chen Namchaisiri, the furniture industry achieves export income of about Bt37 billion (about US$1.1 billion) each year with growth of about 3.5 per cent last year, he said.

16:15 | Deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control (DDC), Dr Khajonsak Kaewjarat, has advised the public to only consume poultry and eggs from certified vendors and practice good personal hygiene over the Chinese New Year period to prevent the spread of ‘bird flu’.

Meanwhile, deputy director-general of the Department of Livestock Development (DLD), Dr Jirasak Pipattanapongsopon, said an inspection of meat vendors has been conducted and any who violated the regulation will be prosecuted.
