In the February 27, 2017 edition of Newsline, presenter Cholaphansa Narula tells us about:

• Large numbers of people from all walks of life continue to flock to the Grand Palace in Bangkok to pay their last respect to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Palace records show that more than 32,000 people visited the palace on Saturday alone.

• The Provincial Administration Organisation (PAO) of Uthai province has given a house worth about Bt50,000 (about US$1,864) to a family of low-income earners in honour of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The PAO project enables low-income earners in the 16 districts to improve their living standards.

• Thailand Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has defended the use of Article 44  of the Interim Constitution to search for Phra Dhammachayo, the former abbot of Dhammakaya Temple who is accused of money laundering, receiving stolen property, and land encroachment is not an attempt to bully monks, but to mount restrictions in the monastery to facilitate the  search for the fugitive monk.

• The president of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) Professor Pornpetch Wichitcholchai has debunked latest news reports claiming that he had approved up to 394 absences from 400 assembly meetings. He warned media outlets against reporting fake news and and advised them to check their facts prior to publication.

• The Thailand government is promoting a homegrown international level standard for agriculture production system termed ‘ThaiGAP’ to upgrade the quality of Thai agricultural products. ThaiGAP was developed by Kasetsart University and the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) and is aimed at promoting food safety, improving welfare of the operators, as well as protecting the environment.

• The deputy minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives travelled to Chaiyaphum province to view first-hand construction of a reservoir aimed at tackling water shortage and drought problems, but which remains incomplete after more than 30 years.

• Fire fighters in Nakhon Panom Province are  working with military officers to speed up construction of firebreaks after about 15 acres of land was ravaged by fire over the past four months. People in the area have also been warned to refrain from any burning activities to prevent future fire outbreaks in the area.

• The Thai government has expressed that the decision of the US president Donald Trump to sign off America as part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade could either be beneficial or negatively affect Thailand as US may still consider goods made better and affordable from foreign countries adding that there’s a possibilIty for the US to impose higher taxes on some countries which might exclude Thailand.

• The Minister of Transport has opened highway No 24 connecting the districts of Nang Rong in Buriram with Buachet in Surin  meant to link to promote international trade in Asean.

• The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has paid a visit to the Kingdom of Thailand to observe the lives of Muslims, particularly those in the Southern provinces, and to observe efforts by the Thailand government in promoting promote peace and sustainable development in the region.
