Hundreds of thousands of Hanoians have taken to the streets of the Vietnam capital to participate in the 70th Vietnam National Day anniversary.

Some 30,000 members of the Vietnam Armed and civil forces took part in the grand parade which commenced at Ba Dinh Square, attended by Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), State President Truong Tan Sang, Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and other Party and Government leaders. Joining the official party were delegates from Laos PDR and the kingdom of Cambodia.

Celebrations kicked off with a torch-light procession which saw national flag-saluting ceremonies conducted at 12 locations throughout the Vietnam capital followed by a 21-gun salute to mark the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution that led to the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945\

Addressing those gathered to mark the celebration President Sang reviewed major landmarks in the country’s development since, paying particular homage to the leadership of late president Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnam military victory over the French at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, and progress of the CPVs Doi Moi (Renovation) policies introduced 30-years ago.

“Vietnam has continuously developed to become an emerging country with its people having stable life from a poor and backward nation”, Mr Sang said.

The celebratory speeches were followed by a mass military parade led by Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA), followed by elements of Vietnam’s border guards and the Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG).

Also joining the 70th Vietnam National Day parade, which weaved its way through Hanoi’s wider streets to bring the celebrations to as many people as possible, were military doctors and health workers, air defence and elements of the Vietnam Air Force, police units, firefighters, and other civil and society groups.

Interspersed among the ranks of uniformed men and women brightly coloured troupes of dancers, marchers, and musicians added bright splashes of colour and entertainment to the more than one-hour long 70th Vietnam National Day parade in Hanoi.
