As of 01:40 GMT March 17 there was 1,125 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the 10 Asean member countries, an increase of 209 on the day prior.

The most number of active cases remain in Malaysia where 138 new cases yesterday saw the number of people with active COVID-19 infections rise to 524, with nine people reported to be in a serious or critical condition.

Thirty-three fresh cases in Thailand yesterday saw its COVID-19 active case load jump to 111, one of which is considered serious or critical.

In Singapore and Indonesia 17 new cases in each yesterday saw the number of active COVID-19 cases there rise to 134 and 121 respectively, with 11 people in Singapore classified as serious or critical.

Four new cases in Brunei and Vietnam saw their totals COVID-19 increase to  54 and 45 respectively.

In the Philippines two new cases on the first day of the Metro Manila lockdown saw the total number of cases there rise to 125, one of which is said to be in a serious or critical condition.

Over the last 24-hours Cambodia reported no new cases of COVID-19, while Laos PDR and Myanmar are yet to report a single COVID-19 case.

There has now been 1,359 confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in Asean member countries, with 216 people having been treated and discharged.

Eighteen people have died from COVID-19 in Asean member countries.

Global COVID-19 cases up to March 17

As of 01:40 GMT March 17 the number of new cases of COVID-19 globally rose 7.65 per cent day-on-day (DoD) to 182,547, an increase of 12,970.

This is the largest single day increase in new cases since February 12 when a change in calculating methods used by China saw a massive spike in confirmed cases over a 24-hour period. The calculating method was changed again the following day.

The number of deaths globally attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours jumped 9.89 per cent DoD to 7,164, an increase of 645, the majority (345) in Italy. China reported 13 deaths during the period.

Meanwhile the number of people treated and discharged globally rose by 2,128, or 2.74 per cent over the day prior to 79,881.

As of 01:40 GMT March 17 there was 95,502 active cases of COVID-19 globally, of which some six per cent or 6,061 cases were classified as serious or critical.

Based on completed cases (number of discharged + number of dead), the current case mortality rate is eight per cent.

At the current rate there will be/ have been more than 550,000 cases by the end of March, and more than 29,000 deaths.
