Shoppers at Perak night markets looking for new brand-name running shoes at bargain prices are likely to be disappointed following a series of raids by the Perak Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry.

Following raids in Bukit Merah, Menglembu on Tuesday officials continued their hunt for knock-offs in Ipoh this morning (June 7, 2017), where 2,764 fake Adidas and Nike sports shoes valued at Rm62,000 (about US$14,535) were seized.

In addition to the shoes, Malaysian authorities took statements from a 21-year-old and a 72-year-old man. Conducted under Malaysia’s Trade Descriptions Act, offenders are subject to penalties of up to Rm10,000 ($2,344) for each pair of counterfeit shoes, up to three years jail, or both.
